Need a trash cart? If you’re buying a newly built home or having a home built on Bonaire, there’s one more practical matter to take care of besides getting the keys: arranging a trash cart for your household waste. This process raises questions for many new residents, especially because it works a little differently here than in the Netherlands. Below, we explain step by step how it works.
Step by step: arranging a trash cart for your new home
Applying for a trash cart on Bonaire works differently than in the Netherlands. You do not apply directly through the waste collection company. Instead, this is arranged through WEB (Water- en Energiebedrijf Bonaire) when you register the water connection for your new home in your name. The waste collection fee is collected by WEB through your water bill.
- New water meter = new trash cart. As soon as you buy or build a new home and register the water meter in your name, you will receive a trash cart free of charge, one time only.
- The application goes through WEB. When applying for a new water connection, ask the WEB (Water- en Energiebedrijf Bonaire) representative to complete a trash cart application form for you. Alternatively, if you already know your customer number, you can also apply for a trash cart by email.
- Submit the form to Selibon. You can email the completed form to Selibon, the local waste management company, or deliver it in person.
- Trash cart delivery. Keep in mind that delivery may take longer than expected. Therefore, arrange the application form as soon as the water meter has been registered in your name. This will help ensure that you are not left without a trash cart.
- Trash cart damaged? No problem: Selibon will replace a damaged trash cart free of charge. Simply send them an email, and they will send you a form to complete.
What if your trash cart is stolen or goes missing?
Has your trash cart been stolen or gone missing on Bonaire? Contact Selibon NV, the local waste management company, to request a new trash cart.
- Call or email Selibon: (+599) 717 8159 or balie@selibon.com. You can also visit their office at Kaya Industria 20 in Kralendijk (next to Warehouse Supermarket).
- Ask your neighbors: your trash cart may have been accidentally taken by the waste collection service or ended up somewhere further down the street.
- Suspect theft? Report it to the KPCN/police. You will need the police report, together with your WEB customer number, to obtain a new trash cart from Selibon.
How much does it cost?
As a household, you receive your first 240-liter trash cart free of charge. If you would like an additional trash cart, the fee is US$82.52 per quarter. If you live off-grid and are not connected to WEB’s water network, you are not eligible for the free trash cart provided through WEB. In that case, you pay US$82.52 per quarter for your first trash cart.
The rates for trash carts and waste collection are likely to increase. The Executive Council of Bonaire has agreed to introduce cost-covering rates for waste collection and processing for both households and businesses.
Who handles waste collection?
Waste collection on Bonaire is handled by one company: Selibon NV. The Public Entity Bonaire (OLB) has appointed Selibon as the island’s official waste collection service, responsible for the collection, transportation and processing of household and commercial waste.
In addition to trash carts, there are several recycling stations around the island, including in Hato, Rincon, Amboina and Tera Kòrá. There are also collection points at supermarkets such as Van den Tweel and Zung Kong, where you can separately dispose of glass, plastic, cardboard and metal.
