Water and electricity on Bonaire (WEB)

When you buy a property on Bonaire, the water and electricity connections must be transferred to your name with WEB. WEB (Water- en Energiebedrijf Bonaire) is responsible for supplying drinking water and electricity on Bonaire.

For an existing property, this usually involves transferring the existing connections to your name. For a newly built property that does not yet have water or electricity connections, you will need to apply for a new connection. Different fees and conditions apply.

Existing property: transferring WEB utilities to your name

After the transfer of an existing property, the water and electricity connections must be transferred to the new owner’s name. This can only be done after the property has been legally transferred to you by the notary.

WEB security deposit

When transferring the utility connections to your name, you pay a security deposit to WEB. The costs are:
1. Administration/connection fee: US$ 40
2. Water security deposit: US$ 100
3. Electricity security deposit:
a. standard connection capacity (3 × 35 amps): US$ 150
b. for example: a connection capacity of 3 × 80 amps: US$ 370
4. Security deposit per air conditioner: US$ 75

Refund of security deposit after sale

After selling a property, you must request a refund of the security deposit from WEB yourself. The deposit is not automatically refunded when the utility account is closed.

Approximately 6 weeks after the transfer, you can request the refund by emailing info@webbonaire.com. Include your customer number and bank details and attach a copy of your passport. Once the request has been processed, it takes approximately 10 business days for the security deposit to be refunded to your bank account.

New utility connection for a newly built property

Are you buying a newly built property or building a new home that does not yet have water and electricity connections? In that case, you will need to apply for new connections with WEB. Different fees and conditions apply to new connections than to the transfer of existing connections.

For a standard connection of up to 25 meters, the following one-time connection fees apply:

drinking water (standard connection up to ½”): US$ 1,261.69;
electricity (standard connection up to 3 × 35 amps): US$ 1,853.15.

Always check WEB’s website for the current rates. If the property is located more than 25 meters from the existing water or electricity network, or if a higher-capacity connection is required, WEB will provide a separate cost estimate. In addition to the connection fees, you will also pay the standard security deposit for water and electricity.

Inspection certificate for new construction

For the permanent electricity connection of a newly built property, you need an inspection certificate. The electrical installation must be inspected, and the inspection certificate must be completed and signed by an authorized electrical installer.

During construction, you can first apply for temporary water and electricity connections. A temporary electricity connection is also subject to specific requirements and requires an inspection certificate completed by an authorized electrical installer.
